Commemoration event devoted to the 20th January was organized

On January 18, the memory of 20th January tragedy victims was honored with great respect. After the opening of the event a moment of silence was observed for the memory of the martyrs. Deputy Chief of Main Police Department of Baku, Police Major General Elkhan Hasanov noted that 20th January was one of the most bloody crimes committed against our nation in past century.

Deputy Chief noted that this violation had the purpose to suppress fight of Azerbaijani nation for the national freedom and specially emphasized that this intention didn’t realize due to nation’s will.
Then top officer of Main department’s Chief on personal staff, Police Colonel Ali Valiyev gave broad information about historic roots and main reasons of this bloody tragedy, and noted that on January 19, 1990 7 hours before emergency declaration special operation detachments of soviet army and sections of internal troops were brought in Baku. The process of capture of Baku was accompanied by cruelty and unseen brutality.

It was emphasized that in Baku and districts of republic 147 people were murdered, 744 were wounded, 841 were arrested in illegal way by the army. Military men destroyed 200 houses, apartments and burned 80 cars, as well as ambulance cars.
Police Colonel drew attention to the role of great leader Heydar Aliyev, who on January 21, 1990 together with his family members arrived in permanent representation of Azerbaijan in Moscow and held press conference. Police Colonel noted that notwithstanding pressure to him, nationwide leader Heydar Aliyev criticized people responsible for the tragedy of his nation near Cremlin and in front of whole world. After Heydar Aliyev returned to the government in 1993, the issue of assessment of 20th January tragedy in the political and legal level became inevitable.
In the decree, signed on January 5, 1994 about organization of fourth anniversary of 20th January tragedy, National Assembly was noticed that the tragedy had been assessed in the political and legal level. At the end of the event Deputy Chief of Main Police Department Major General Elkhan Hasanov emphasized that every nation had tragic moments, as well as heroic moments in its history.
Black January became tragedy as well as the sign of heroism of Azerbaijani nation.
But 20th January will remain in the history of Azerbaijan mostly as national freedom fight for the independence.
